With all due respect to sisters Patty and Mildred J. Hill (the reputed writers of “Happy Birthday to You”), there are tons of other great songs to celebrate the anniversary of your birth. Sure, you can read mournfulness into this tale of former lovers, celebrating a birthday long after they’ve grown up and moved on. But there’s also acceptance, biblical allusions, social critique, even a microwave - everything we’ve come to expect from a writer as nuanced as Carly Simon.

Before the late, great musical theater writer Jonathan Larson brought us the Tony and Pulitzer-winning rock opera RENT, he went semi-autobiographical with Tick, Tick, Boom! In this show-opening number, the main character bemoans turning 30 (in 1990 no less) before he feels ready.
