Two years ago, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it would conduct a review of the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees to determine if they still served their intended purpose. Today, the DOJ has formally closed its review and will take no action to modify or terminate the decrees but left open the possibility of changes in the future.

The U.S. House of Representatives today passed and President Donald J. Trump signed into law the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion emergency relief bill that provides economic assistance for businesses and individuals affected by the COVID-19 crisis. It includes provisions that may help music creators who are self-employed, independent contractors and those who own or work for small businesses.

Out of consideration for the health and safety of our members and all other participants, and due to rising concerns about the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), the determination has been made to cancel the 2020 ASCAP Experience.

One of Broadway’s most decorated composers is giving an accolade of his own: The Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Teacher of the Year Award will represent the highest level of achievement for a middle or high school theatre teacher, with the winner receiving $5,000 and travel to the International Thespian Festival for the announcement and recognition.

The jury also awarded Special Distinction to Ryan Lindveit for "Close Up at a Distance," a 12-minute work for full orchestra.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will honor the &ldquo;King of Country Music,&rdquo; George Strait, with the ASCAP Founders Award at the 51st annual ASCAP Country Music Awards, to be held on Monday, November 4th, 2013 at the newly opened Music City Center in downtown Nashville. The invitation-only black-tie gala will also honor the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP's most performed country songs from April 1st, 2012 through March 31st, 2013.

The 9th annual ASCAP &ldquo;I Create Music&rdquo; EXPO will be held April 24th-26th, 2014 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The three-day event is the premier conference for songwriters, composers and producers in all genres of music.

<p>ASCAP hosted its 25th annual Television &amp; Film Scoring Workshop from July 8th - August 1st, 2013. The Workshop, which is held annually in LA, provides the training ground for young composers to score a scene from a feature film with a professional orchestra and all the support that an A-list composer would receive.</p>

The results of the biennial election for the Board of Directors of ASCAP were announced today by ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams. Twelve writer and twelve publisher members have been elected to serve on the Board for a two-year term commencing April 1st, 2013.

Honorees include T.I., Michael Mauldin, Kendall Minter, Noontime Music and Pebbles. The night will also feature performances by Demetria McKinney, The Teddy White Band and DJ Baby Yu.

<p>ASCAP is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend, Christopher John Amenita, 55, who passed away on August 3rd, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
