The ASCAP Family Dazzles the 77th Tony Awards

Broadway’s biggest night was a whirlwind of triumphant victories, emotional acceptances and epic performances. On Sunday, June 16, ASCAP creators’ music, lyrics and stories were celebrated with wins in all the musical categories including Best Musical, Best Revival, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and more.
Welcome to the summer of Suffs; The votes are in, and Shaina Taub has emerged a first-time Tony winner, taking home both Best Original Score and Best Book for her musical tribute to America’s suffragist heroes. Theatre fans will surely "keep marching" to the Music Box Theatre for her enthralling historical epic.
Fans of the late legend Stephen Sondheim also had something to sing about. His Merrily We Roll Along – which had a short run after hitting the Broadway stage over 40 years ago – has finally found its audience. The buzzy production nabbed Best Revival, and beloved Broadway orchestrator and musical director Jonathan Tunick took home a long-deserved Tony for Best Orchestrations for his enchanting arrangements.
And let’s not forget Best Musical. A hearty congratulation to Zach Chance of Jamestown Revival, whose music and lyrics for The Outsiders propelled a treasured story to reach new heights – and new fans – adapted onstage.
The big night at Lincoln Center, hosted by Ariana Debose, was full of thrilling moments, like Alicia Keys being joined by her fellow ASCAP superstar Jay-Z to perform “Empire State of Mind” in celebration of Hell’s Kitchen and presenters from the ASCAP family including Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo and more.
