Short Form Infomercials (under 5 minutes)
Long Form Infomercials (5 minutes or more)
TV Commercials, Public Service Announcements & Movie Trailers
ASCAP processes performances of music in TV commercials, PSAs and movie trailers that are reported by MediaRadar (a digital monitoring system, formerly known as Vivvix), on the basis of a census survey – in other words, a complete count of performances.
If your music is used in a TV commercial, PSA or movie trailer, complete the steps below:
-
Register your music with ASCAP
A work registration must be on file at ASCAP in order to match information about your work to our survey data and correctly distribute royalties. Check your catalog in Member Access or the ASCAP mobile app. If the work has not been registered, you must register the work with ASCAP first. When you register your music, you are submitting information about your original musical work, not about the advertisements in which it was used. - Submit your claim through a Message in Member Access
Log into Member Access and submit your claim as a Message, using category “Advertisement Claims” and topic “TV Commercial, TV PSA, Movie Trailer." You will need to include the following information in your Message to ensure your claim is processed:
- First Airdate of Advertisement
- ASCAP Work ID
- Product/PSA Name
- Source of Music
- Link to a website containing your musical work (separate from the advertisement)
- If a link to a website containing your musical work is not available, please provide an MP3 file of your musical work
- MediaRadar (formerly Vivvix) Ad Codes. You can obtain MediaRadar Ad Codes from https://app.vivvix.com/magnifier/home. You will first need to create a free MediaRadar account and search for the commercial on the MediaRadar website. Please click here to contact MediaRadar and request a free account.
- If the TV commercial, PSA or movie trailer is not monitored by MediaRadar, please see the Recorded Sub-Sample section below.

Network Promos
ASCAP processes all promos on ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, Univision, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, A&E, History, Lifetime, LMN and NFL Films based exclusively on information submitted by these networks to ASCAP. If your music is used on a station or network not listed above, please see the Recorded Sub-Sample section below.
Recorded Sub-Sample
ASCAP relies solely on Soundmouse fingerprint technology to identify music used in:
- Radio Commercials
- Public Service Announcements not monitored by MediaRadar
- Short Form Infomercials
- Movie Trailers not monitored by MediaRadar
- Promos not on ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, Univision, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, A&E, History, Lifetime or LMN
- TV Commercials not monitored by MediaRadar
Complete these steps if your music is used in one of the above types of media:
- Register your music with ASCAP
Check your catalog in Member Access or the ASCAP mobile app. If the work in question has not been registered, you must register the work with ASCAP first. When you register your music, you are submitting information about your original musical work, not about the advertisements in which it was used. - Create a Soundmouse account
Contact Soundmouse to set up a free Music Manager account, which will allow you to upload your audio files and metadata via their online portal. Email them directly at helpdesk@soundmouse.com with the following subject line: ASCAP Music Manager Account Creation -
Submit your audio and metadata via Soundmouse
Be prepared to provide the following data fields:- Library name (if applicable)
- Audio file name (= unique identifier)
- Track title ISWC (optional)
- ASCAP Work ID (available after your work is registered. This is not the same as an "ASCAP Web Reference Number")
- Composer and publisher name(s)
If music with different versions of audio (different instrumentation, timbres, keys) is used for the same advertisement/product you need to source each version separately to ensure digital detection.
In order to be detected by Soundmouse, send your audio and metadata within 45 days of the performance period (first air date). See the chart below for a list of deadlines.
|
Example: If your commercial airs in January your audio and metadata should be sent to Soundmouse by the following March 15 |
|
|---|---|
| Performance Period (first air date) | Submission deadline to submit audio & metadata to Soundmouse |
| January | March 15 |
| February | April 15 |
| March | May 15 |
| April | June 15 |
| May | July 15 |
| June | August 15 |
| July | September 15 |
| August | October 15 |
| September | November 15 |
| October | December 15 |
| November | Following January 15 |
| December | Following February 15 |
Note: Performances tracked by Soundmouse are processed based upon a sample survey. Please click here for a list of our Cable TV sample dates.
TV Long Form Infomercials
TV infomercials of five minutes or longer are processed for royalty distribution in the same manner as other TV programs – using information ASCAP obtains from cue sheets, and performance data supplied by ASCAP licensees and third parties.
If your music is used in a TV long form infomercial, follow the below steps:
-
Register your music with ASCAP
Check your catalog in Member Access or the ASCAP mobile app. If the work in question has not been registered, you must register the work with ASCAP first. When you register your music, you are submitting information about your original musical work, not about the infomercial in which it was used. -
Submit your claim in Member Access
Log into Member Access and submit your claim as a Message. Select the category "Advertisement Claim" and the topic "TV Long Form Infomercial." include a description of the claim, and attach all supporting information (e.g. a cue sheet and any other relevant documentation, including any known alternate titles*). You may track the progress of each claim by checking your Message inbox in Member Access.
A link to a cue sheet template for infomercials is provided below.

Please note that we do not accept airdate schedules for processing claims; we rely on the schedule data provided by third parties.
*If an infomercial is also known by an alternate title that wasn't included in your initial claim, you must notify ASCAP by submitting a new claim via Member Access following the procedure set forth above. ASCAP uses that information to identify and match the performances.
