ASCAP Creators Soar at Triumphant 75th Annual Tony Awards

Radio City Music Hall was electric last night as Broadway came together to celebrate the inimitable, improbable 2022 season in all its glory. And no surprise here – ASCAP musical theater writers were showered with well-deserved statues, standing ovations and appreciation for their magical creations.
Two decades in the making, Michael R. Jackson’s “big black and queer-ass American Broadway show” has now earned him the 2022 Tony for Best New Musical to go with his Pulitzer Prize for A Strange Loop. Jackson, luminous with joy, was also recognized with Best Book of a Musical, because “Michael Jackson writes real life!” And in an exciting twist, Loop co-producer, ASCAP member and songwriting icon in her own right Jennifer Hudson achieved EGOT status with this historic win! She’s only the 17th person to achieve this honor and the second Black woman (after Whoopi Goldberg).
The Queendom also had reason to rejoice, with our PRS affiliates Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss winning Best Original Score for their music and lyrics to Six: The Musical. Bow down to musical theater royalty!
And speaking of musical theater royalty… phone rings, door chimes, in comes Best Revival of a Musical for the late Stephen Sondheim’s New York City classic Company. All rise for an enduring classic and the continued delight it brings to Broadway audiences!
