ASCAP Creators Triumph at 78th Annual Tony Awards

On Sunday, June 8, the 78th Annual Tony Awards returned to Radio City Music Hall – hosted by the incandescent Cynthia Erivo – for a night of showstopping performances, historic wins and magical moments. Members of our ASCAP family were honored with armfuls of Tony Awards for their innovative and inspiring work during the last season of Broadway musicals. 

It was definitely a happy ending for the cast, crew and creative team behind Maybe Happy Ending. The show took home six Tonys, including Best Musical. The dynamic duo of Will Aronson and Hue Park won Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. ASCAP member Michael Arden nabbed Best Director of a Musical, and the great Darren Criss won his first Tony for Leading Actor in a Musical for his heartwarming portrayal of jazz-loving helperbot Oliver. 

Other highlights from the night include: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Blvd. taking home Best Revival of a Musical; the original Broadway cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s iconic musical Hamilton reuniting to perform in celebration of the 10th anniversary; And let’s not forget ASCAP member Cole Escola accepting the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for their bold and bratty take on Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! (dressed in full Bernadette Peters glory).
